How SERVPRO Provides Value To Adjusters And Their Clients

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Logo SERVPRO offers commercial service to business owners 24/7.

Insurance adjusters for business owners in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Clawson, Madison Heights & Troy, MI collaborate with a variety of professionals to assist clients, including commercial remediation specialists. These companies work with the owners and the adjuster to effectively repair properties after a disaster.  However, one of these organizations stands out among the rest.  SERVPROSERVPRO of North Oakland County goes above and beyond in serving agents and their clients through various methods.

1. Fast Response

Disasters can occur or manifest at inconvenient times.  The insurance client might notice a leak right before the weekend or a fire could ravage a building in the middle of the night.  A strong restoration company offers a response service that is available to business owners 24/7 and deploys experts in a matter of hours.  Fast emergency repair helps the business recover fast and it reduces the insurance claim expenses, benefitting both the adjuster and the client.

2. Detailed Information

The information regarding commercial damage is important since it helps both the client and the insurance adjuster make the best decision regarding the case. SERVPRO has a claims information center that collects and organizes information in a way that is useful to the insurance agent.  It provides a job file that includes photos, detailed descriptions, and paperwork, as well as job costs and industry-standard comparisons.  Agents can request this information in both physical and electronic copies.

3. Pretesting Process

Adjusters prefer to restore property and objects instead of replacing them, as the latter is more expensive.  The best way to measure restorability is to have a remediation company run pretesting on the affected area and belongings.  In addition to determining what can be salvaged or replaced, the process provides information to both the technicians and the adjusters.  They can see what equipment and methods they need for best results and the estimated costs from the procedure.

The right remediation company can make the repair process beneficial to both the insurance adjuster and the establishment owner.  SERVPRO provides these services and more to successfully help both parties.

Why SERVPRO Is The Leader In Disaster Management Companies

3/12/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Logo We Are Here To Help!

Two years after SERVPRO opened, they had sold their first franchise.  With that, they began their fast growth into the large company they are today.  There’s a good reason why that growth was so fast.  SERVPRO knows what they’re doing.  In fact, they’ve created their own training programs for each employee to complete in order to verify the quality that is received for each and every job.  When these specially trained professionals arrive at your Clawson, Madison Heights or Troy, MI doorstep, they do not come empty handed.

Creating a State of the art restoration company is a part of the value of hiring SERVPRO.  Upon the assessment, Moisture Detection equipment will be able to measure the quantity of water hidden in the damaged area.  This can not only help identify a source, but also give the team areas to focus on, rather than tearing apart the entire area unless need be.  After the assessment, the team will bring Water Extraction equipment, Drying equipment, Odor Removal and Deodorization equipment, as well as all the Sanitization needed to remove any bacteria remaining from the water damage.

SERVPRO’s investment in high quality technology provided all the evidence you need to choose them for any damage you experience in your home, store, or building.  The priority during the restoration process is not just quality, but speed.  A speedy process is easier when using the newest technology.  Dependent upon the area of the space affected, the appropriate quantity of equipment will arrive at the site promptly, saving you time and money.  Water damage is an overwhelming situation to deal with, which no company understands better than SERVPRO.

Winter Weather 101: Stay Alert

12/30/2020 (Permalink)

Brutal Winter Weather in Michigan Always Be Prepared For Michigan Winter Weather

We are now 10 days into winter here in Metro Detroit, and it’s usually a long brutal season.  As we all know, we have dealt with many harsh winters in the past, such as the polar vortex back in 2014.  With how 2020 is going, one never knows what is going to be thrown at us next.  With that being said, we should all take steps and be ready to take on winter our Michigan winter weather.

To start, let’s know some winter terminology brought to you by the National Weather Service.  Winter Storm Products - We have all heard words like “warning”, “watch”, and “advisory”. We hear these things from our meteorologist, on the radio, and even from our peers. We all chat about the weather but what do these things actually mean? The National Weather Service has given us a list with some definitions:

Winter Storm WARNING: Snow, sleet, or ice are expected.  Take Action!

Winter Storm WATCH: Snow, Sleet, or ice is possible.  Be Prepared.

Winter Weather Advisory: Wintery weather is expected.  Exercise Caution.

Freezing Rain: Rain that freezes when it hits the ground; creating a coating of ice on road, walkways, trees, and power lines.

Sleet: Rain that turns into ice pellets before reaching the ground.  Sleet also causes moisture on the roads to freeze and become dangerously slippery.

For more information about winter storms, visit The National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service and the CDC are great resources to find how to prepare for many types of weather-related storms.  When disaster does strike, please know we are here to help around the clock.  Cold weather, snow, and ice storms can cause severe damage to your Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills or Troy, MI home or business.  When these types of disasters strike, you must immediate action is necessary to prevent additional damage to your property.  We have the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

As The Flu Season Approaches With COVID-19 Still Around, Here Are Some Things That May Help

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Flu Season Sign The Flu + COVID-19 = No Fun!

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged all Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and Troy, MI business owners and homeowners alike to find ways to live and work without exposing themselves or others to this highly contagious virus.  Now, here in Metro Detroit, the approaching flu season is set to complicate that challenge even further.  To help control the threat that the one-two punch of COVID-19 and the seasonal flu presents, SERVPRO of North Oakland County urges everyone to be extra vigilant about following cleaning and disinfecting protocols this year.

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) believes both COVID-19 and the seasonal flu spread primarily by droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk.  While not as frequent, it is also believed adults and children can contract COVID-19 or the flu by touching a surface or an object that has virus particles on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes.  The CDC continues to recommend a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses, but experts also emphasize the importance of cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily to help mitigate the potential spread from contaminated surfaces.  This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

To limit exposure and control the spread of these double threats, SERVPRO recommends you wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol, keep your hands away from your face, and wear a mask to protect others.  For effective daily, routine cleaning at home or at work, we recommend first removing surface grime and dirt with soap and water, then following up with a disinfectant. It is easier to feel comfortable about limiting exposure at home where you can control how clean your surroundings are.  It is more difficult out in public; but this year especially, it is important to be aware of the space you are in.  You need to learn to recognize spaces where cleaning is – or is not – a priority so you can adjust your behavior accordingly.

For those home and business owners who have specialized cleaning requirements or who simply want the peace of mind that a professional cleaning service can offer in this stressful time, SERVPRO of North Oakland County can help.  While we remain a leader in disaster cleanup and remediation situations, we also provide that same ‘deeper level of clean’ for everyday residential and commercial cleaning.

In addition, SERVPRO offers our "Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned" program, developed for businesses in response to the pandemic.  The high level of confidence that a professionally cleaned space provides offers welcome reassurance to patrons as the flu season intersects with COVID-19.

SERVPRO specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers.  For more information on SERVPRO of North Oakland County please call 248-439-1160.  For more information on the "Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned" program, please click here.

Have You Prepared Your Vacation Property For Winter?

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Be prepared. Disasters can happen anytime. Get Ready For Winter!

Now that Summer is sadly coming to an end here in Michigan, it is time to start preparing your vacation property for colder weather.

If you haven’t closed up for the Winter months yet and have a few more trips up North or around Metro Detroit, don’t forget to do a quick inspection of your property to ensure you are ready to leave.  Turn off the water main, and drain the existing water from sinks, toilets, and outdoor spigots.  Once the water main is switched off, turn on faucets, spigots, and flush toilets until water no longer flows out.  Also, check the following:

  • Pipes under every sink.
  • Water heater.
  • Seals around windows (in case it rains).
  • Appliance hoses: washing machine, dishwasher, and ice maker.
  • Sump pump.  Dump a bucket of water into the sump pump to ensure it is working. Make sure to listen to its motor running as well.
  • Toilet tanks.  Look for cracks that may worsen and leak while you are gone.

Give a set of keys to a trusted family member, friend, or neighbor and have them check on your property periodically while you are gone.  The amount of times they should check in depends on the length of your trip, but it should be at least twice a week.  Once water damage occurs, letting it stagnate for days at a time can multiply the cleanup costs tremendously.  Show your house sitter all bathrooms, where the water main is, and other areas at risk of water damage.  Leaving a check list for them will make sure they do not miss any subtle leaks or moisture.

Leave heating and cooling systems running as normal.  This allows air flow through your home and prevent humidity from building up.  They also will keep pipes from freezing if there is a sudden temperature drop one night, which is more of a risk during the Fall and Winter months than during the Summer.

If you happen to have any type of water damage during your time away, we are always here to help!  We are available 24/7 so that when a disaster strikes, we have your back.  We quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment.  Contact us anytime - 248-439-1160.

Do You Have An Emergency Plan?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

National Preparedness Month Disasters Do Not Wait! Make Your Plan Today!

Here in Troy, MI and all around Metro Detroit, it’s never too early to start an Emergency Preparedness Plan.  Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area.  Know how you will contact one another and reconnect if separated.  Establish a family meeting place that is familiar and easy to find.

Step 1: Put a plan together by discussing the questions below with your family, friends, or household to start your emergency plan.

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?

  7. Get ample face coverings for everyone over 2 years old, and plenty of disinfectants.
  8. Make sure your sheltering plan is intact.

Step 2:  Consider specific needs in your household.

As you prepare your plan, tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities.  Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets, or specific needs like operating medical equipment.  Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance.  Keep in mind some these factors when developing your plan:

About Coronavirus

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”)i is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.  It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Scope of Cleanup Protocol

SERVPRO of North Oakland County can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure.  The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents.  The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum. These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces as well, including:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving and Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Stair Handrails

  • Fitness Equipment

Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures

Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste.

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar type organisms to COVID-19.

SERVPROXIDE™, SERVPRO’s proprietary disinfectant, is a hospital-grade disinfectant that has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to COVID-19 on hard, non-porous surfaces. Currently there are no disinfectants that have been tested specifically for this particular emerging viral pathogen. However, per the CDC, this product can be used against COVID-19.  In addition, SERVPROXIDE™ currently has dozens of EPA-approved claims including Feline coronavirus, Canine coronavirus, Staphylococcus (MRSA), E. coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, Swine flu (H1N1) and more. Are Storm Damages Something You Can Write Off?

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the next major storm?

Business owners must think of innovative ways to meet customer demands.  There is, however, one variable that can throw a monkey wrench into the workings of any company: severe weather. As you probably know, storms and other natural disasters can bring your Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, or Troy, MI Company to a standstill.  If your business has sustained storm damage, you may be able to deduct some of it on your annual tax return.

Determine the Source of Your Business Damage

To know whether damage to your Oakland County, MI business is tax deductible, you must first determine the source of the damage.  Damage from the following types of natural disasters is often deductible:

  • Thunderstorms
  • Hurricanes
  • Tornadoes
  • Floods
  • Earthquakes
  • Blizzards

When determining whether damage is caused by a storm, you must look for sources of other possible damage.  For example, failure to properly maintain your business before the storm hit may render your organization ineligible to list it as a deductible expense.

Consider Whether Your Insurance Policy Covered the Damage

The next part of the analysis involves your insurance.  If your commercial policy covered storm damage, you likely cannot deduct it on your tax filing.  If, on the other hand, your insurer did not pay for the damage, you may be able to list it as a deduction.  You can also usually list the difference between actual damage and the amount your insurer paid as a deduction.  If you failed to file an insurance claim that would have otherwise been covered, you are probably ineligible to claim the damage as a deduction, though.

Virtually all business eventually sustains some type of storm damage.  While relying on insurance to help control costs is a good idea, you must have a full-throttled strategy to ensure business continuity.  Restoration companies like SERVPRO of North Oakland County can likely help return your company to its pre-storm condition.  Then, you may be able to deduct some storm-related expenses on your business tax return.  Please call 248-439-1160.

What To Do About Smoke Damage And Odors After A Fire

1/11/2019 (Permalink)

If your business in North Oakland County, MI has been affected by a fire, not all of the damage was a result of the flames. In addition to repairing burned spaces and equipment, soot and smoke cleaning will be a major part of returning your business to full operational capacity. Identifying all of the damage as soon as possible will make it easier for you to get back to business faster.

Identify Fire and Smoke Issues

Smoke damage affects many different areas of your business, and smoke odor can linger if you don't identify all of the destroyed areas where offensive aromas occur and can be trapped. Make sure to address large and small areas of your office spaces:

  • Exterior and interior windows and doors stained by smoke
  • Carpets, curtains, furniture and soft surfaces that retain odors
  • White boards, projection screens, speakers and other multimedia components that can become discolored in a fire
  • Structural walls, ceilings and cubicle walls made of porous materials that can retain smells
  • Hardcopy records, manuals, training materials and paper files that can trap acrid air in cabinets and closets

Surfaces Can Be Cleaned and Restored

Once materials and structures that have been damaged are removed from your facility, repairs and renovations can begin. Wood, glass and metal hard surfaces can be sanitized and restored with proper smoke cleaning. Smoke damage in fabric, woven and permeable soft surfaces can be addressed with cleaning equipment that removes the dirt and soot and then cleanses the surface. Air and residual smells can be addressed by placing equipment such as ozone machines, air filtration devices and thermal foggers that target smoke odor in strategic places throughout the affected spaces.

By identifying all of the fire, smoke, and odor damage as soon as possible after firefighters have extinguished the flames, you can be better prepared when it's time for you to call a professional smoke cleaning company for your business in North Oakland County, MI.

With some steps of prevention and things to look for you can save a lot of headache and money this winter season.

Things to look for when you suspect you have an ice dam problem:

  • Ice or water starts to form on the siding or around windows
  • Ice begins to build on top of the gutters or lower edge of roof
  • You see icicles forming on the edge of your roof this can be with or without gutters
  • Ice begins coming through the soffit vents or through the soffit itself.
  • PREVENTING ICE DAMS
  • You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake or a broom or plastic shovel. Keeping the access snow from building up on the edge of the roof.
  • Heated cables are another prevention tip for ice dams. Attached with clips along the roof's edge in a zigzag pattern, heated cables combat ice dams that lift shingles and cause leaks

Avoiding Disasters Each Winter

12/28/2018 (Permalink)

The winter season is final here and with it comes shorter days and lower temperatures.  No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. Many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves to help keep homes warm. Did you know, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths?  According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires cause an estimated $1 billion in direct property damage annually. Keep the following safety tips in mind to help reduce your risk of heating-related fires in your home the winter season.

  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heater
  • Test smoke alarms monthly
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

When It Comes To MOLD... SERVPRO is THE Choice!

12/28/2018 (Permalink)

Even if you are a clean person, that doesn’t guarantee that you won’t have an issue with mold. Unfortunately, mold, like bed bugs, doesn’t care about your level of cleanliness, level of income, or where you went to college. Anyone can have a mold problem in their home or business at any time.

The scary thing is that mold can be growing for quite a while before it becomes noticeable; your professional at SERVPRO of North Oakland County has compiled this handy list of some do's and don’ts you should follow when it comes to mold removal:

24/7 support - 248-439-1160

Do:

  • Examine your home or business regularly. Most types of mold share some obvious warning signs. For example, a musty smell in a damp basement usually means there’s mold around. Black, gray, brown, or even white clusters of mold on walls, carpeting or flooring are easy to spot with the naked eye. Be observant about your home and check it regularly for mold.
  • Call us 24/7 -  248-439-1160 A professional can determine which type of mold you might have, where it originates from, and how to safely perform mold removal.

Don’t:

  • Try the DIY approach. Because some molds are toxic to pets and humans, it’s not safe to tackle this problem on your own. The money you think you might save by DIY-ing this isn’t worth your health.
  • Wait. Mold can grow quickly and can be dangerous. If you suspect a problem, call it in ASAP!
  • Make the mold feel unwelcome. Mold likes the darkness and warm, moist air. Don’t roll out the red carpet with their favorite things! Fix the leaks, install dehumidifiers and don’t ignore the warning signs of more mold growth.
